Bilingual Spanish Books About Family

Bilingual Spanish Books About Family - Mi LegaSi

As a Latina mom, family is at the heart and core of my life.  I want to teach my young daughter about family, our values, the differences, and what makes us special.  These bilingual Spanish books all talk about family and are a great addition to your child's home library.

Bilingual Spanish Books About Family

1. Mi Familia A Mexican American Family

I love the concept of this book.  While we do not have this book, we can definitely relate as my daughter is American born with extended family in Colombia.  It's from the boy Juan's perspective as he talks about his family.  For bilingual parents that speak only Spanish at home, it's great because Juan touches on the fact that his family speaks Spanish at home.  Just note that the book is a bit on the short side.

Mi Familia A Mexican American Family

The perfect book for Mexican American kids.

My Mexican Family

This book was especially written for Mexican American children. This is the story of a multicultural family, told by Juan, a boy born in the United States whose parents are Mexican. Juan is proud of being bilingual and he thinks that speaking Spanish helps him communicate with his loved ones, such as his grandparents who live in Mexico.

2. In My Family En mi familia

A good book for the older child with vivid illustrations, this book is a great addition to Family Pictures, another great book by the same author.  This depicts a Latino family in pictures with a story.

In My Family En mi familia

Following the best-selling Family Pictures, In My Family/En mi familia is Carmen Lomas Garza's continuing tribute to the family and community that shaped her childhood and her life. Lomas Garza's vibrant paintings and warm personal stories depict memories of growing up in the traditional Mexican-American community of her hometown of Kingsville, Texas.

3. The Heart of Mi Familia

As a mom raising a bicultural daughter, this book speaks to my familia.  I love how it depicts the differences between a Latino household and an American household.  While I appreciate the Spanglish, I can't help but notice incorrect Spanish translations like "surpresa" and "tameles."  That being said, the illustrations and story are strong enough that the typos are a matter of easy correction.  For us, despite the flaws, it's still a win.

The Heart of Mi Familia

Follow a young girl as she works with her abuela and her grandma to create a wonderful birthday present for her brother that celebrates her multicultural family and honors both sides and generations of her family. This follow up to the award winning Marvelous Maravilliso: Me and My Beautiful Family is a must-read for all families.

4. Family Pictures, 15th Anniversary Edition / Cuadros de Familia, Edición Quinceañera

A book that goes well with In My Family Family Pictures take us into a very look at the life of author Carmen Lomas Garza's Mexican childhood.  Perfect for Mexican families or families that want to learn about Mexican culture.  Even though we are not Mexican, we do find many similarities that can be compared between our Colombian culture and their's.

Family Pictures, 15th Anniversary Edition / Cuadros de Familia, Edición Quinceañera

Family Pictures is the story of Carmen Lomas Garza's girlhood: celebrating birthdays, making tamales, finding a hammerhead shark on the beach, picking cactus, going to a fair in Mexico, and confiding to her sister her dreams of becoming an artist. These day-to-day experiences are told through fourteen vignettes of art and a descriptive narrative, each focusing on a different aspect of traditional Mexican American culture.

Cuadros de Familia, Edición Quinceañera

The English-Spanish text and vivid illustrations reflect the author's strong sense of family and community. For Mexican Americans, Carmen Lomas Garza offers a book that reflects their lives and traditions. For others, this work offers insights into a beautifully rich community.

5. Grandma's Favorite or in Spanish Mi Abuela y Yo

I bought this book for my daughter as we have been spending much more time with my mom and I wanted my daughter to see how different abuelas are.  It's a lovely book and so sweet, even showing that a relationship with a grandmother can be strong when you're close or far away.  I love this book.

 Grandma's Favorite

Whether a grandma fixes cars, goes to the gym, loves loud, silly songs, or catching bugs, time with her grandkids is what she loves most of all!

6. God Gave Us Family or in Spanish La familia es un regalo de Dios

I love this book.  It's so inclusive.  Talks about how God created different families and each family is special in their own way.  I like that it references families with single parents, separated parents, families without parents, and even adoptive families but they're all symbolized with animals.  A great book to have for more spiritual families.

God Gave Us Family

Little Pup’s wolf family is on their way to a special reunion—with lots of cousins, games, roasting marshmallows, and fun! As the young wolf thinks about different kinds of families, it’s the perfect opportunity for Mama and Papa to teach their inquisitive child about the families that God brings together. Some families are big and others are small, some are led by grandparents or just one parent, and some families include adopted little ones– yet each family is truly special.

La familia es un regalo de Dios

Even the members of Little Pup’s pack make up an important role in his family, although they sometimes pester him. Papa gently reminds his son…

“We need to love the family God gave us.”

A heartwarming and colorful addition to the best-selling God Gave Us series, this tale will delight young hearts and help them understand how families of all types reflect God’s unconditional love.

7. The Family Book / El libro de la familia

Such a great book for toddlers and preschoolers about different kinds of families.  I love how bright it is and it's also a great book for early Spanish and English readers.   This is a good one to have.

The Family Book / El libro de la familia

From New York Times bestselling author-illustrator Todd Parr, comes a universal story that celebrates the diversity of families—in an English-Spanish bilingual edition!

Algunas familias son grandes. Algunas familias son pequeñas. Algunas familias viven cerca de uno al otro. Algunas familias viven lejos de uno al otro.

Some families are big. Some families are small. Some families live near each other. Some families live far from each other.

Whether you have a big family or a small family, two moms or two dads, a clean family or a messy one, Todd Parr shows readers that no matter what kind of family you have, every family is special in its own unique way.

With his trademark bold, bright colors and silly scenes, The Family Book encourages readers to celebrate and be proud of their own families.

8. I Belong/Yo pertenezco: A board book about being part of a family and a group/Un libro sobre formar parte de una familia y un grupo

This is a cute book about being a part of a family and other groups.  It shares the sense of belonging and is great for an early age when children are just discovering their social environments.  While not limited to family, the book starts and ends with family being the focal point and we love it because it is in Spanish.

I Belong/Yo pertenezco
A bilingual English-Spanish board book about being part of a family and a group.

A sense of belonging is a basic human need. Now in a bilingual English-Spanish edition, this friendly, reassuring board book shows toddlers what it means to belong at home and in a group. “I have a place I always belong. People in my family listen and help me.” Children see that they have safe places where they feel loved and where they talk, play, share—and help others belong too. Warm, realistic illustrations illuminate the text, showing children eating, playing, making music, and working together with family and friends. “Belonging feels so good! I want to help others feel good too.”

A section for adults in both languages offers tips on talking about the book together, along with activities for helping children build a sense of belonging. Access to digital downloads is also provided.
