LGBTQ Equality and Diversity Books For Kids in Spanish and English

LGBTQ Equality and Diversity Books For Kids in Spanish and English

Everyone is different and unique.  Books can help adults and children identify with characters about their differences or their family's differences.  As a mom to a daughter that prefers hockey, skateboarding, lego, and who's favorite color is blue, it's important to me to nurture her nature and not push society's traditional gender roles, especially within the Latino culture.  Here's a list of LGBTQ and diversity books that may help your child see differences in other children, themselves, or their family and best of all, includes Spanish titles.

 1.  When We Love Someone We Sing to Them: Cuando Amamos Cantamos

Geared for the older child, this book is about a boy who loves another boy and wants to serenade him.  I love that it breaks stereotypes and shows a loving and supportive male parent relationship with the young boy, something so needed in the Latino culture.

 Cuando Amamos Cantamos

Concept:

  • WINNER--2019 International Latino Book Award (Best Children's Picture Book in English)
  • WINNER--2019 International Latino Book Award (Best First Book-Children & Youth-Bilingual)
  • 2019 American Library Association "Rainbow Book List" Selection

When We Love Someone We Sing to Them: Cuando Amamos Cantamos

A reclamation of the Mexican serenata tradition, follow the story of a young boy who asks his father if there is a song for a boy who loves a boy. Como reapropiación de la serenata Mexicana, Cuando Amamos Cantamos cuenta la historia de un niño que le pide a su padre que canten una canción para un niño que ama a otro niño.

When We Love Someone We Sing to Them reframes a treasured cultural tradition to include LGBTQ experience. In this book, we learn about the Mexican tradition of singing to family and loved ones through one boy who naturally assumes the tradition includes him and his experience.

2.  Antonio's Card/ La tarjeta de Antonio

This story is about a boy with 2 moms, his mother and her life partner, and how he's faced with a challenge at school.  I love the realness of this book and how it shows a non traditional Latino family represented.

La Tarjeta de Antonio

Concept:

Antonio loves words, because words have the power to express feelings like love, pride, or hurt. Mother's Day is coming soon, and Antonio searches for the words to express his love for his mother and her partner, Leslie. But he's not sure what to do when his classmates make fun of Leslie, an artist, who towers over everyone and wears paint-splattered overalls. As Mother's Day approaches, Antonio must choose whether or how to express his connection to both of the special women in his life. Rigoberto González's bilingual story about a nontraditional family resonates with all children who have been faced with speaking up for themselves or for the people they love. Cecilia Concepción Álvarez's paintings bring the tale to life in tender, richly hued detail.

3. Julián Is a Mermaid or the Spanish version Sirenas

A wonderful and simple bilingual book that celebrates a little boy's individuality and love for mermaids and something special his abuela does in response.  Available in Spanglish or Spanish.

Julian is a Mermaid

Concept:

In an exuberant picture book, a glimpse of costumed mermaids leaves one boy flooded with wonder and ready to dazzle the world.

 Julián Is a Mermaid

While riding the subway home from the pool with his abuela one day, Julián notices three women spectacularly dressed up. Their hair billows in brilliant hues, their dresses end in fishtails, and their joy fills the train car. When Julián gets home, daydreaming of the magic he’s seen, all he can think about is dressing up just like the ladies in his own fabulous mermaid costume: a butter-yellow curtain for his tail, the fronds of a potted fern for his headdress. But what will Abuela think about the mess he makes — and even more importantly, what will she think about how Julián sees himself? Mesmerizing and full of heart, Jessica Love’s author-illustrator debut is a jubilant picture of self-love and a radiant celebration of individuality.

10.  Fiona Flamingo

This  book is so much more than about colors, it's about feelings, bullying, and being different.  We were gifted this book and it's one of my daughter's favorites.  It teaches that sometimes people (or flamingoes in this case) can be mean when you are different and can make you feel excluded, but that there is more beauty in showing your true colors and self.

Fiona Flamingo

Follow Fiona through her color-changing, feather-filled day as she learns to accept not only being a different color from the rest of her flamingo flock, but also that it's okay to be scared, angry, and sad at times.

Fiona Flamingo

Our first book recommended by teachers and doctors to help children understand and manage their feelings.
