Let’s talk 💛
This past weekend we drove out and mijita attended regional tryouts for USA Hockey Development Camps. These camps serve as the beginning of the pathway to the Olympics.
It was the first year that she qualified to compete and we had no idea what to expect.
While my husband was busy playing music and being on stage, mija had her eyes set on a different stage...one that could lead her to her dream of playing in the Olympics.
The competition was fierce. 14 goalies including her, and about 100 players total.
I was so proud of my daughter for showing up, for giving it her all.
Was she the best? No.
But was she determined? Oh you better believe it.
So what happens now?
Nos toca esperar.
We wait and trust the process.
And that feeling, you know, of doing the right things and trusting the process?
That mi amiga, is very much how bilingual parenting feels too.
Because most of us focus on the result.
Why Isn't my child speaking yet?
When will the Spanish come out?
Are they responding?
Is it even working?
But just like hockey tryouts,
the result is not what you can control.
What you CAN control is whether you are focusing on the right things.
Y la verdad es que,
most of the things that parents stress about in bilingual parenting?
They matter a lot less than you think.
Things like:
❌ Perfect Spanish
❌ Speaking Spanish all day
❌ Correcting every mistake
❌ Doing every recommendation you see online
None of that is what bilingual parenting is really about.

Instead of asking: "Why isn't my child speaking Spanish yet?"
Try asking: "Am I showing up consistently with the right approach?"
Simply asking this changes everything.
