I grew up speaking Spanish at home and English at school.  My parents spoke only Spanish with us, even though my father was bilingual.  My siblings and I spoke English every opportunity we got, much to our parents displeasure.  We hated speaking Spanish.  To us it was simply a way of communicating with our family.  It wasn't until years later that I truly appreciated the effort my parents put forth making sure we were able to speak, read, and write Español.

I never thought I would say this, but I've seriously become my mom, not a regular mom, but a Latina mom, and yes there's a big difference!  I remember growing up, rolling my eyes at the things my mom would do that were, well different than other moms.  I didn't think much of it back then but now looking back I completely get it.  I can now find humor and see my 3 year old daughter rolling her eyes at the things I do, but I hope that one day she too can look back and appreciate these different...

Hispanic Heritage Month is here and it's time to celebrate our Hispanic Heritage!  I couldn't find a list of children's books that were specific to Hispanic and Latin countries so I decided to create one. There are so many countries and each one celebrates it's culture, traditions, and even may speak Spanish differently, um plátano or banano?  Though we may be grouped by many as simply being Hispanic, Latino, or Mexican, the truth is that our countries are all different and these books celebr...

There is one phrase I always tell mi familia and friends, “As long as my daughter can grow up and not be an asshole, then I think I did a good job as a parent.”  Of course I want my kid to grow up and one day accomplish bigger and greater things than I have, but for me, it shouldn’t be at the cost of being a decent human being.  Trying to raise a kind kid with empathy, concern, and care for all living things so she can grow up making a difference is at the top of my list like so many parents....

The holidays are my favorite time of year.  It reminds me of the great times we had as kids (me below), the festive parties my parents used to throw, la musica de parranda and of course the food!  But what about those of us that may not have our families nearby or those whose parents have passed away?  How can we continue and pass down our holiday traditions with our children while creating new traditions?
