How Raising a Bilingual Child Can Earn Your Child a Scholarship - A Latina Mom's Story

A School Decision.  A Scary “No.”  A Big Lesson.

To be honest, the past few weeks have been stressful as we’ve tried to figure out what the next chapter would look like.

Mija had been attending a private Catholic school that I carefully chose. But sometimes in life, the choices we make help us see what we are and aren’t willing to accept.

For us, that meant realizing we weren’t willing to accept a “highly reputable school” whose main focus seemed to be money and test scores, instead of a more balanced approach to education.

It was a hard decision, especially after such a rigorous acceptance process.

So now what?

Ay Dios mío, back to square one!

I started researching school after school and, almost by coincidence, came across a new and very forward-thinking school.

Once again, we went through the whole process.

Interviews.
More interviews.
And then the waiting game.

Eventually we received the news:

Mija was accepted!

Amazing news… right?

Well, yes... until we saw the tuition 🤯.

Let’s just say it looked more like college tuition than middle school tuition.

With a heavy heart my husband said,
“There’s no way we can afford that.”

And you know what I said?

“Then let God and the universe close that door.”

Now, I’m not turning this into a religious email. But I do want to share something important.

Sometimes “no” is not the end of the conversation.

Many of us in the Latino community were raised to simply accept things as they are without questioning them.

I’m here to tell you:

Question things.

So I emailed the school and told them that while we loved everything the school offered, we simply weren’t in the financial position to afford the tuition.

And then I did something that had never been mentioned anywhere during the process.

I asked:

“Are there any scholarship opportunities?”

I figured… porque no?
What did we have to lose by asking?

After another round of back-and-forth conversations, something incredible happened.

Mija was awarded a 70% tuition merit scholarship...Free Dinero for private education.

Which means…

We’ll essentially be paying the same tuition we were already paying.

Mija is a bright student.

She’s 10 years old, in middle school, and has made Principal’s Honor Roll since she started.

And now she has received her first scholarship.

But this story isn’t about saying, “Look what we did.”

It’s about showing you what is possible for your family too.

Because with all my heart I believe my daughter’s success in school and in sports has largely been shaped by two things:

1)  Raising her bilingually
2) Understanding how she learns best

Knowing her learning style has helped us support her strengths, build her confidence, and advocate for opportunities like this one.
