Does Speaking Spanish Affect Parent-Child Bonding? What Brain Science Says

Hola Hola,

20" of nieve. Bilingualism and connection. And what happened with the LIVE workshop?

Let’s talk 💛

Primero… how are you doing?

One day at a time, my friend. Siempre.

Ok, can we talk winter for a second?
I’m over it. No, de verdad.

Right when the snow began melting, mother nature said “Yeah, right!” and slammed us with not just more snow, but a full-on blizzard. Many of us were not prepared.

And honestly… can we really trust weather forecasters? 😅

(pictured below my dog Hope who LOVES the snow)

But here’s the thing.

Sometimes life catches us off guard.
And we’re not prepared for what’s in front of us in the moment.

Take my Live Workshop:
“Why Your Child Isn’t ‘Learning’ Spanish and How to Change That in 2026.”

My goal was simple. I wanted to surprise you and drop the full recording immediately on The Latina Mom Legacy podcast. No extra effort from you. Just press play and benefit.

And what happened?

My editor  (who normally turns around an episode in 24 hours) got promoted (which is amazing for him 👏🏽)… and now needs more lead time.

Two things could’ve happened.

I could’ve gotten frustrated and rushed something out.

Or I could’ve said, “¿Sabes que? I’m happy for you. We’ll wait.”

What do you think I chose?

You’ll hear the episode tomorrow or Saturday,  so keep an eye on your inbox or make sure you’re subscribed to the podcast.

Así pasa.

There are things we control.
There are things we don’t.

Perspective is everything.

And honestly?

The same applies to raising bilingües.

Because sometimes what makes us want to stop…
isn’t the snowstorm.

It’s fear.

Fear that:

• Our Spanish isn’t strong enough.
• Our accent sounds awkward.
• English will “win.”
• We’re somehow disrupting connection.

And this week, I read something that made me smile.

A new study published in Frontiers in Cognition looked at bilingual mothers and their young children during play.

Researchers used brain imaging to measure something called “neural synchrony”  basically how aligned a mother and child’s brains are while interacting.

And here’s what they found:

The brains of mothers and children aligned just as strongly in their second language as in their native language.

Read that again.

Speaking your non-dominant language does NOT weaken bonding.

The strongest brain alignment didn’t come from which language was spoken.

It came from interaction.

Play.
Shared attention.
Engagement.

Not perfection.
Not vocabulary size.
Not native-level fluency.

Connection.

So if you’ve ever wondered whether speaking Spanish “less perfectly” affects your bond…

Science suggests your presence matters more than your proficiency.

It’s about how you show up.

That’s what wires the connection.

And tomorrow’s podcast episode, or Saturday's ;) will walk you through what might actually be happening when your child isn’t speaking Spanish and what you can do about it in a way that builds connection, not pressure.

We can’t control the weather.
We can’t control every delay.

But we can choose to continue.

Con intención.
Con confianza.
Y con amor.

Bendiciones.
